Insight emphasizes the importance of starting early. Success in high school requires sufficient time and planning. Insight counselors believe that freshman year is the most appropriate time to start maximizing the value of a student’s educational experience.  A freshman at Insight can expect to:

Transition into high school academics
Developing strong study skills are necessary for success at the high school level.  These skills include note-taking, reading critically, testing effectively, planning study schedules, and managing time.  Learning these skills early on helps to ensure academic success for all four years of high school.

Build the right foundations
Because the SAT I/II exams actually test an accumulation of knowledge, it is essential that students begin early to develop these skills.  The counseling program guides the freshman in developing verbal skills, such as building a foundation of college-level vocabulary, reading comprehension and writing proficiency, as well as fine-tuning math concepts and problem-solving abilities.

Explore a variety of extra-curricular activities
Colleges look for students who are involved in school as well as the community.  Because students often do not know what their passions are, the Insight counseling staff provides a wealth of information on various extra-curricular activities and guides freshmen to start exploring their interests.  By the time Insight freshmen become sophomores, they are ready to commit themselves to a select group of activities that they will continue for several years.  Insight freshmen can also expect to enter a variety of contests and competitions.
Understand the college application process and begin to research colleges and majors
This key component of the Insight counseling program helps freshmen determine which academic fields they like, so as to bring focus to future career paths.  Counselors start early to assess the student’s interests and guide them to learn more about specific college majors.  In addition, counselors begin to expose students to a variety of universities both in the US and abroad in order to inspire students to start thinking about college.

Establish life skills that are necessary to succeed in high school, college, and beyond
Insight counselors stress the importance of learning excellent communication skills by having students speak to their teachers and volunteer job supervisors.  Students are consistently taught to take a positive and proactive approach to their lives and encouraged to believe in their own talents and ability to set goals and attain them.  Counselors also help students realize their leadership potential by participating in class, running for office, or starting an organization.  Truly mastering these skills takes time, effort, and guidance, so freshmen reap the maximum benefits of the Insight counseling program by starting early!
