Insight’s counseling program for juniors emphasizes the importance of taking action and understanding what needs to be done to be a solid college applicant. Because junior year is so crucial and juniors must keep track of so many things, the Insight counseling program helps juniors keep on top of their work, strengthen any remaining weaknesses in their college applications, plan and prepare for SATs, and research colleges extensively. A junior at Insight can expect to:

Prioritize and excel in high school academics
College admissions officers focus on junior year grades because they are the most recent evidence of a student’s academic abilities and study skills. Because junior year is so important, Insight’s counseling staff helps juniors maintain the strongest academic record possible. This includes planning study schedules and structuring daily routines, as well as communicating with teachers in order to build strong teacher relationships. In addition, counselors teach juniors how to take a proactive effort in their studies and become leaders inside the classroom.

Prepare and plan for standardized tests
With the intense load of academics, taking standardized tests can be quite overwhelming. Insight assists juniors and eases the load by providing expert advice on which SATs to take and when to take them, assigning homework, teaching basic strategies and building necessary skills, and giving diagnostic tests with detailed score reports. Juniors also benefit from working with counselors who have a solid understanding of how the standardized testing process works. The Insight program plans to have all juniors hit their goal scores by the end of junior year. This allows the senior year to be focused on the college application process itself.

Assess gaps in extra-curricular activities
Colleges look For Students and Parents who are involved in school as well as the community, and junior year is often the last real chance students get to build their extracurricular profiles. Counselors analyze the students’ current profiles to ensure that their major passions are reflected and assign any additional activities that they feel would be important to create a well-rounded application. Insight counselors also research extensively to find unique research positions and volunteer programs to help juniors stand out from the crowd. In addition, counselors guide juniors in attaining leadership positions to strengthen their college applications.

Research and determine colleges and majors
Many students often do not begin thinking about colleges, majors, and special programs until it is too late into the senior year. Counselors provide a wealth of information about various colleges and special programs that students may not have considered. Planning for the college admissions process in the junior year is crucial to make sure that all students have fulfilled the necessary requirements for college entrance in their specific major interest. By preparing well in the junior year, students are not overburdened in their senior year and have the time that they need to make sure their college applications are successful.
