Kevin Holt: College Admissions Counselor

Hello! I am Kevin Holt, a college counselor with 15 years of experience in higher education. I grew up in the Bay Area and attended Burlingame High School. I feel blessed to call such a diverse, vibrant, and beautiful place home. The dynamics of the Bay Area are such that many can see success around them and feel intense pressure to follow similar technology and business paths. For me, that road forward was not in tech! I chose to attend the University of San Diego because I liked small classes and I was awarded a merit scholarship. There I studied History and Anthropology, two of my passions! After graduation, my journey into counseling began with work at UCLA’s Honors Programs as a para-counselor. The Honors Program pulled my application from an application I submitted to their admissions office, and just like that I found an unexpected home. With a father as a pastor and mother as a teacher, working as a counselor in higher-ed was match made within my core values. My four years at UCLA were so fulfilling that I decided to get my Masters in College Counseling. I attended San Francisco State’s renowned Master’s program and received my MS in College Counseling with a minor in Career Counseling. While there, I worked in high school admissions at a private company in Redwood City and spent a second practicum year as an International Student Counselor at City College of San Francisco.

After finishing my Masters, I moved to Korea to try something new and experience a new culture. I spent one year as an English (ESL) teacher before becoming the College Counselor for Cheongna Dalton School – an international American high school based in Incheon. I worked with all high school levels, including eighth-graders, on their curriculum, testing, and achievements to build on while keeping an eye on applying to college. I helped my Cheongna Dalton students apply to and gain admission to Ivy League universities such as Cornell, Columbia, and PENN; the UCs including UCLA and Berkeley; Duke, Carnegie Mellon, Rice, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, and University of Michigan; and art schools, to name a few. I’ve also had students attend world universities such as University College London, University of Hong Kong, University of Lausanne, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Tsinghua University, Singapore National University, and a plethora of colleges in Korea, Japan, Australia, Canada, and Vietnam.

Since my return to the United States, I have been an Academic and Career Advisor for STEM degrees, including analytics, at Northeastern University – Silicon Valley campus. I have realized that working with high school students and their families is my strength, a passion I now continue to pursue as a counselor with Insight Education.

I am easy going yet full of energy and can relate to young people and their enthusiasm for finding their passions in life! I was a guitar player in a successful band for 10 years and have traveled to over 40 countries including living in Korea. Outside of music and culture, my interests vary from being a huge soccer and sports fan (Go Warriors!) to building Lego sets to reading Atlases! I am a very curious person so I will want to get to know about each student and the story behind making you unique. Let’s get to work and find the right college and career path for you!
